Communion
Reflection |
|
Sunday 7th February
It was at the very moment Peter recognised his
sinfulness, that Christ challenged him to become a fisher of men.
Peter knew that the only thing he could rely on was the word and the
power of Jesus Christ.
We must not be put off by our weaknesses, or make an excuse out of
them for doing nothing. Rather, we must learn to turn them to our
advantage. Listen to how Paul did this.
‘Though I could boast, I won’t. It’s true that I’ve had revelations,
but to stop me from getting too proud, I was given a thorn in the
flesh. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away, but he
said: ‘My grace is enough for you: my power is at its best in weakness.
So, I am not only content with my weaknesses, but I have actually
learned to boast of them, for it is when I am weak that I am strong,
because then the power of Jesus Christ is available to me.

Dear Friends,
My dear People,
As the diary for the month of January is being prepared I thought I might
take the opportunity to get a few things written before we really get into
the New Year. No doubt the words ‘Happy New Year’ will echo in our ears for
the next few days. We live in hope that this New Year will be a good year
for us. Some of us will be glad to see the back of the past year for it may
have been the year when we experienced a great deal of sadness in the depths
of our hearts. We can be facing into this year with out loved ones who were
an intimate part of our lives. Despite all our individual sadness and pain
we are still faced with the challenge to live. We continue to live, as the
song goes, ‘with hope in our hearts’.
These days can give us a chance to reflect on the events of the past year.
What were the significant events that had a big influence on us; the
ordinary things we take for granted and yet so essential to our personal
contentment and happiness. The significant things could have been cause for
distress, grief and mourning while we may have missed out on occasions to
express gratitude for the ordinary kindness we received from people. If we
have failed to show our gratitude to people in the past year, we might take
to heart the attitude of Saint Francis when he was aware of the failures of
the friars. His words of encouragement were, ‘Let us begin again.’ We
jettison our sense of failure and start all over again positively and with
belief that through the grace of God through Jesus Christ we can improve on
our gratitude for the gift of those ordinary people who are so integral to
the contentment of our lives. In their own quiet way these people are
another means through which God makes His presence known. We are blessed in
so many ways. The best way we can respond to these blessings is to reflect
on these people and count our blessings.
The saddest part of the past year for me as your pastor is witnessing to the
number of you who have lost loved ones. In some cases the loved ones are
very young. Many of you have had to carry your extreme sorrow in the
quietness of your own hearts; In your sorrow may the Holy Spirit come down
upon you to help and console you; may you find in your friends and
companions sources of strength and of hope.
Through the past year I have found great support from the kindness of other
people. I could not mention you all. I could leave someone out. You people
have lightened my burden through your ordinary Christian love. You appear to
have that love in abundance. The Lord has sent you into my life and I should
respond with love and with a heart full of gratitude for your being part of
my life. You are truly the instrument of God’s love for me and for the
wonderful gift you are I bow in praise to the One who supports and guides me
through His divine Providence.
May the lord give you His Peace.
