Fr. Edmund – 10th Anniversary

Kraineem (24 February 2005)

By Fr. Vincent

I first met Fr. Edmund in early September, 1959, when he was thirty two years of age and was giving us Franciscan novices in Killarney our 8-day Retreat in preparation for making Temporary Vows. I was undecided about continuing as a Franciscan and I asked to meet Fr. Edmund to go to Confession and to discuss my future. We had a long and very fruitful discussion and as a consequence I was able to make up my mind to continue as a Franciscan and make my First or Temporary Profession of Vows. At that time Fr. Edmund was the Guardian of the Irish Franciscan College in Louvain and was pursuing Doctoral studies in Sociology in the University. Later he was appointed Professor of Sociology in the National University of Ireland at University College, Galway. Over the years, he was appointed by the Irish Government as a member of many important Government Commissions. Eventually, he also became Guardian of the Franciscan College in Galway. Later, in July 1987, when he was appointed by the Franciscans as Guardian of the Irish Franciscan College (St. Isidore's) in Rome and other important assignments, he reluctantly had to resign his position as Professor in the National University of Ireland and take up residence in Rome.

Having completed his important assignments in Rome, he was appointed by the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel (Cardinal Danneels), on the recommendation the Irish Franciscan Provincial, as Parish Priest of St. Anthony's English-Speaking Parish here, as well as Chaplain to the English-Speaking Catholics of the Archdiocese.

Fr. Edmund became a much-loved Pastor and was sorely missed when the Lord called him to his Heavenly Reward on 25th January, 1995
