TSUNAMI APPEAL – ‘Thank You all so much’
Kraineem (24 February 2005)
By
Jenny Handayani
Hi, my name is Jenni Handayani, I am Indonesian and I have been a parishioner of St. Anthony’s since 1993. On 22 and 23 of January 2005, I stood before all of you at the weekend Masses and made a special charity appeal for victims of the Tsunami in South and South East Asia. The appeal raised in excess of a staggering €5.000 and I am deeply grateful to you all for your generosity. The money raised will support CARITAS (through its office in Brussels) and PULIH foundation in Jakarta, Indonesia. A brief summary of the work they are doing is given below.
CARITAS is a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social service organizations working to build a better world, especially for the poor and oppressed, in over 200 countries and territories. Caritas works without regard to creed, race, gender, or ethnicity, and is one of the world’s largest humanitarian networks. Caritas provides a beacon of hope for tens of millions of women, men and children in times of hardship and contributes to the development of social justice in times of peace. Caritas’ mandate includes integral development, emergency relief, advocacy, peace building, respect for human rights and support for proper stewardship of the planet’s environment and resources. The Caritas approach is based on the social teaching of the Church, which focuses on the dignity of the human person. Caritas’ work on behalf of the poor manifests God’s love for all of creation.
The money collected in St. Anthony’s will go to Caritas for their projects in the areas devastated by the Tsunami. (more info on Caritas on their website
www.caritas.org).
PULIH is a professional non-profit foundation for trauma intervention and psychosocial recovery, providing services for survivors of violence and humanitarian workers/human rights defenders in Jakarta and conflict affected areas in Indonesia. Established by mental health professionals, Pulih is dedicated to fill the gap in the provision of psychosocial services for survivors of violence. Pulih runs programmes targeting secondary school age students (13-15 years of age), teachers and communities providing Technical Assistance to Save the Children in implementing local programmes for capacity building of local organizations in Psychosocial Structured Activities. Since the disaster it has set up programmes in Aceh to help survivors cope with the trauma of the
Tsunamia.
Surviving the tsunami disaster, facing immense lost and devastation, the people in the province of
Aceh, Indonesia, will need years of recovery, to heal, to have hope, to survive and to rebuild their community life which in turn will support their personal and individual healing.
Thank you all so much for giving so generously to the appeal.
TERIMA KASIH
(Thank You)
