First Annual Praise in the Woods!

by Ada Nickerson

Kraainem (19 August 2006).- On Sunday, July 2, a gathering at the Bois de la Cambre had a different focus than most of the gatherings on the warm summer day.  Members of St. Anthony’s parish met there for an afternoon picnic and fellowship. The idea behind it was to give thanks and praise to our Lord by enjoying His beautiful creation and breaking bread together.  In the process, families came together, shared a meal and got to know fellow parishioners better. The picnickers began the afternoon with a song of praise and thanksgiving.  Afterwards, the families sat in a circle and shared bread baked by one of the parishioners. Everyone brought a lunch for themselves and their families, and a little extra to share with others.

The day turned out to be a rather beautiful one.  The sun was out, but it was not too hot.  There were no special activities planned for the day, so  families enjoyed the afternoon playing volleyball, cycling and simply relaxing and conversing with others.  We will hopefully make this an annual event, so more families can enjoy it.

St. Anthony’s is made up of people from many different backgrounds with a shared faith and language.  Many of our families lead such full schedules trying to meet the demands of work and family.  It can be difficult to stay in touch or develop strong ties with individuals outside of those areas, especially for newcomers.  Activities such as these make it possible for families to enjoy time together while developing ties with people who share the same values and interests.  We grow as a parish family as we spend time together playing and laughing.  Our parish is enriched by the personal relationships that are built during these events, so we can better support each other and our community as Christians.

St. Anthony’s will continue to provide these opportunities. On July 30, St. Anthony’s hosted a Bike Ride and Ice Cream Social, where families biked around Tervuren Park and gathered together back at St. Anthony’s to enjoy ice cream sundaes.

We hope that many of you, both new or old-timers with St.Anthony’s, will consider participating in future activities such as the Family Rosary, or Volleyball at the church, as well as other activities planned for the gathering of the faithful. If you have other ideas for family fun events, please contact Ada at 02 731 8760.
