Sunday morning Coffee and Doughnuts

By Susan McEneaney

Kraainem (11 December 2006).- Sunday morning after mass continues to be quite a social occasion with many people opting to come in for a coffee and/or doughnut to catch up with friends and the weekly news.

The coffee and donuts idea was born about 10 years ago, believe it or not, and shows all signs of continuing for many more. Approximately 180 doughnuts are eaten on Sunday mornings – mostly by the children in the Sunday school classes – who, having had an early start to their day, are well hungry by the time classes and mass are over.

In September it was decided by the parish council that we switch our coffee brand and use Fair Trade coffee and this has been the case since then and during 2005 we also switched our doughnut supplier to a local bakery.

A question that is often asked – is there a profit and where does it go? So, yes, there is a small profit and it goes directly into parish funds. Every little helps!

Needless to say, it couldn’t happen without the voluntary efforts of our coffee team. We lost a few regular helpers this year, mostly due to moving away, but we had also had a good influx of new volunteers for after both masses. The roster runs on a term to term basis and each set of volunteers – two per session and two sessions each Sunday - will have a Sunday morning duty approximately every 6 weeks. The whole serving and tidy-up procedure takes only about 1 1/2hrs out of the morning. New volunteers are always welcome as this means that rostered duties will arise on an even less frequent basis.
