Home Family Rosary

by Fiona Murray

Kraainem (11 December 2006).- Like perhaps some of you, I grew up in a family where saying the rosary together was a fairly regular form of prayer. We thought that it would be lovely to ‘revive’ the family rosary both for our own family but also for other families. Therefore, as May is traditionally Our Lady’s month, we took the opportunity to organize a first family rosary involving not just our own but other families. The first Home Family Rosary (HFR) took place in our home on Saturday 20 May. Since May, the HFR has taken place every month, hosted by a different family each time.

The idea is to focus primarily on children, to give them the opportunity to actively participate perhaps by leading a decade of the rosary, lighting a candle etc. It is very special and moving to hear a child recite the prayers and makes them feel involved and important.

Of course, the HFR is not intended exclusively for kids or for parents. Everyone is family and therefore all are welcome – single and married, old and young!

The format is simple: we meet at 6pm, usually take our cushions and beads with us, say 5 decades (with children usually leading each decade). Afterwards, light refreshments are served by the host family. Everything is intended to finish at 7pm. The timing is aimed at allowing families to pursue their other busy weekend activities.
