L'Olivier
Introduction
L’Olivier (the Olive Tree) is a social service for refugees,
operating as a specialised centre within the Belgian St. Vincent de Paul
society. The centre has helped over 7,500 refugee families since it opened
in 1966, receiving on average over 500 visits per month. Our team of 34
volunteers and 6 salaried employees, from 16 countries, includes 3 lawyers
and 3 Daughters of Charity sisters.
We try to provide all types of aid - legal, material and psychological. In
addition, we have a small launderette and can arrange health care for those
with no health insurance. Our SVP “Conference” helps in a more personal way,
with home visits on a longer-term basis.
We help all refugees and displaced persons, whatever their status or
nationality, taking our inspiration from St. Matthew’s Gospel: “I was
hungry, I was thirsty, I was naked, I was sick, I was in prison and you
cared for me…whatever you do unto the least of these my little ones, you do
unto me.”
We always need money(!), food, clothes, kitchen equipment - or your time.
